Summer may be the time for beach parties, backyard barbeques, and fun in the sun. But summer is also prime time for skin issues.
While some skin irritants come with the season, others can be easily avoided by using a few helpful tips. Here are some of the most common summer skin problems and how you can avoid letting them happen to you.
Acne
Our skin just can’t seem to catch a break. In winter, our skin can dry out and lose its protective oils, making us prone to break outs. In summer, the same sweat that does its best to keep us cool mixes with bacteria and oils on the skin, clogging our pores and causing acne.
While some folks may fare just fine during the summer, those with sensitive skin might not. To keep acne and breakouts at bay, wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day and apply moisturizer immediately after.
Dry skin
The air may be humid during the summer months, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your skin is safe from becoming dry. Your skin gets dry when it loses too much water or oil. And you can easily lose both in air-conditioned rooms and chlorinated pools.
To fight back against dry skin, prevent your skin from losing oil or water in the first place. You can do this by applying moisturizer and lotion frequently. You can also use a humidifier in your home if the air is too dry.
Sunburn
Sunburn is one of the most common summer issues. These painful burns and blistering can take weeks to heal. And while they may put a damper on temporary summer plans, they can also cause premature aging and wrinkles.
To prevent sunburn, premature aging, and to reduce your risk of skin cancer, apply a broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher every day. It’s also recommended to wear protective clothing and to stay in the shade when you can.
If you’ve already suffered sun damaged skin, you can use professional skin care treatments to help prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
